Deputy Director of Sports Evans “Jawaķie” Jones has been ordered to pay $1,500 in compensation for damaging a victim’s glasses during an altercation over a case of water at the YMCA Sports Complex on October 5, 2023.

Jones pleaded guilty to malicious damage and battery in St John’s Magistrate’s Court, where acting Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason also issued a restitution order for the damaged glasses.

Failure to pay the compensation by February 10, 2024, will result in a 30-day prison sentence.

The incident occurred when Jones attempted to remove water against regulations, prompting intervention by Paul Steele, who was then grabbed by the throat, causing his glasses to break.

Jones apologized in court, shook hands with Steele, and admitted to making inappropriate comments on Facebook following the incident. Magistrate Wason criticized both men for their conduct, calling it unbecoming of their societal roles.
