PM Browne Urges Greater Female Participation in Politics

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has called for more women to enter politics and strengthen Antigua and Barbuda’s political institutions. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, he commended Maria Bird Browne, the lone female Member of Parliament, but stressed the need for greater gender representation.

“It is unacceptable that in the 21st century we only have one female Member of Parliament in the Lower House,” Browne said, highlighting efforts to achieve gender equity in the Upper House. He acknowledged cultural norms that hinder female leadership and encouraged women to support one another.

“Women make just as good leaders as men. We can’t be treating our women as second-class citizens,” he said, urging the nation to nurture female leaders in homes and communities. Browne expressed hope that more women will step forward by the next general election.
