Prime Minister Gaston Browne has issued a firm ultimatum to the Director of Public Works, demanding significant progress on road maintenance within 60 days.
The directive, he emphasized, comes after ongoing issues with potholes and road deterioration, which he said have been neglected for several months despite available resources.
PM Browne criticized the responsiveness of the Public Works Department, citing unacceptable delays in patching up potholes, which he said persist due to inefficiencies and mismanagement.
He pointed to an instance where only one of the department’s three patching machines was in use, which he deemed unacceptable.
The Prime Minister relayed how he urged the Director to distribute both experienced and inexperienced workers across the machines to accelerate the process.
Despite Cabinet’s approval for the hiring of 40 additional workers and funds allocated months ago for new road saws, PM Browne noted that bureaucratic delays and a lack of follow-through hindered improvements.
He also voiced frustration over what he described as a misplaced focus on “gifts” from contractors rather than on delivering essential public services.
According to Browne, Public Works management has failed to prioritize routine tasks like identifying and patching potholes, which he underscored as essential for public satisfaction and safety.
“If within the next 60 days going into January, we don’t see a significant improvement in those potholes, the Director will be removed,” PM Browne stated, adding that he rarely makes threats about job security but feels it necessary in this case to hold the Director personally accountable.
Browne reiterated that funding is not a limitation, with the government prepared to provide half a million dollars weekly to ensure road repairs are conducted efficiently.
He concluded by emphasizing the need for Public Works to take immediate action, highlighting that if the department’s productivity doesn’t increase, “you’re going home.”
