National Heroes Honored at Wreath Laying Ceremony in Antigua and Barbuda

The lives and legacies of Antigua and Barbuda’s six National Heroes were celebrated today at a wreath-laying ceremony held at Hero’s Park, Tomlinson’s, St. George’s. His Excellency Sir Clare Roberts KCN, KC, the Governor General’s Deputy, led the ceremony, paying tribute to the figures who helped shape the nation’s history.

Speaking on behalf of the Governor General, His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Sir Clare Roberts delivered a moving address in which he highlighted the enduring impact of the country’s National Heroes. These iconic individuals—King Court, Dame Nellie Robinson, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, Sir George Hubert Walter, Sir Lester Bryant Bird, and Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards—were recognized for their leadership and contributions during pivotal moments in Antigua and Barbuda’s development.

Sir Clare Roberts emphasized the relevance of their legacies to today’s generation. “What can we learn from their legacy, and how can we rise to the challenges of our time in a manner that reflects the same level of courage and service?” he asked, reminding attendees of the challenges the heroes faced and the foundations they laid for Antigua and Barbuda’s independence, which was achieved 43 years ago.

The Deputy Governor General urged reflection on modern challenges, such as climate change, youth violence, and educational performance, and encouraged the nation to confront these issues with the same determination and vision as their heroes. “Just as our National Heroes did, we can make a difference at both the local and national levels,” he said.

The theme of this year’s Independence celebrations, From Community Collaboration to Global Gains, was echoed throughout the ceremony as Sir Clare Roberts called for unity and collective effort in building a stronger nation. “Imagine the progress we could make if each one of us sought to collaborate with like-minded, forward-thinking individuals committed to positive change,” he said.

As wreaths were laid in honor of the six heroes, their contributions were remembered not only for their time but also as beacons of inspiration for the future. Sir Clare Roberts closed his address by urging the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda to follow the path of service, perseverance, and vision for the nation’s continued growth and advancement.

Attendees included the Honourable Prime Minister, members of Cabinet, members of Parliament, members of the Diplomatic Corps, senior public servants, and other distinguished guests.

The ceremony served as a reminder of the lasting legacy left by Antigua and Barbuda’s National Heroes and the ongoing responsibility to uphold the values they championed.
