Former Commissioner of Police, Rawlston Pompey, has voiced sharp criticism over Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin’s public advocacy for the promotion of Police Welfare Association Chairman, Corporal Marilyn Harris. Pompey labeled the Attorney General’s statements as “most embarrassing,” accusing the Police Service Commission (PSC) of vindictiveness and victimization for not promoting Harris sooner.

In a strongly worded response, Pompey pointed out that Corporal Harris’s promotion was long overdue, given her 29 years of active and dedicated service to the force. He expressed support for the Attorney General’s call for her elevation but criticized the timing of the advocacy, describing it as a “belated call” that should be considered “scandalous.”

Pompey’s remarks highlighted broader concerns about the PSC, which he claims has been tainted by political appointments and members of questionable character. He further accused the commission of fostering cronyism and nepotism, with members allegedly showing favoritism in recruitment and promotions within both the Fire Brigade and the Regular Police Service.

While supporting the Attorney General’s push for Harris’s promotion, Pompey argued that Benjamin should also advocate for the immediate replacement of the PSC’s current membership. He suggested that the body has been complicit in undermining officers’ career advancement through politically motivated decisions.

Pompey’s critique reflects deep-seated frustration over the management of promotions within the police force, calling into question the integrity and fairness of the PSC. Despite his criticism of the commission, Pompey emphasized that Harris’s elevation is long overdue and that the AG’s advocacy, although late, is a step in the right direction.
