Antigua and Barbuda Advocates for Climate Resilience at 2024 IMF and World Bank Meetings

Senator Dwayne George, along with a delegation from the Ministry of Finance, represented Antigua and Barbuda at the 2024 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG), held from October 21 to October 26 in Washington, D.C.

The delegation’s participation underscores the nation’s proactive role in addressing the global challenges posed by climate vulnerability, particularly for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Throughout the meetings, the Antigua and Barbuda team will place a strong emphasis on discussions related to climate change, focusing on the critical need to enhance climate resilience.

Senator George highlighted the significant risks faced by SIDS, which are disproportionately impacted by the effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels and extreme weather events. He urged global financial institutions and stakeholders to prioritize sustainable development solutions tailored to the unique needs of these vulnerable nations.

The 2024 Annual Meetings serve as a key platform for member countries to engage in discussions on pressing global issues, including international development, the global economy, and financial markets.

With events such as the Plenary session and meetings of the Development Committee and International Monetary and Financial Committee, the forum also featured regional briefings and press conferences where participants shared strategies to tackle global challenges.

This year’s meetings come at a time of significant transformation for the World Bank Group and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

As these institutions evolve to better address the unprecedented global challenges, the focus remains on climate action, sustainable development, and the creation of meaningful employment opportunities, particularly in fragile and low-income countries.

Senator George’s participation at the meetings reflects Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to contributing to global dialogue and action on climate change. By advocating for stronger climate resilience and support for SIDS, the country aims to secure sustainable development solutions that can protect its people and economy from the ongoing threats posed by climate-related disasters.
