Dear Editor

Years ago, many persons had the aspirations to be employed in the private sector. It was obvious that the brand, the salaries & the fringe benefits were alot better than what was been offered within the public & statutory establishments.

Interestingly, I have noticed that in recent times, the opposite seems to be happening. A paradigm shift has taken place. Persons, are now targeting the statutory boards to get a job and migrating from the private sector over to the statutory sector,  ensuring job security, top positions and higher salaries.

Now, from my vantage point, although there is this crossover of individuals from the private to the statutory sector, it seems to me that the professionalism that’s been adopted within the private sector is not simultaneously, traversed over to the statutory establishments. Hence, that new brand of taking the operations of the statutory coporations up to the next level is not seen among its staff.

As I a result, I had to conclude that these statutory corporations such as State Insurance, Medical Benefits, Social Security, Port Authority, Customs, SLBMC just to name a few, are primarily being used as CASH COWS by the top employees including those persons who are coming from the private sector. It is  perceived that the wellbeing of the lower staff, along with the health and image of the organization’s profile is of least concern on the agenda of these persons in the top positions who are earning the highest salaries.

Instantly, a statement that was made by a former esteem political minister came to mind, concerning a cohort of senior employees  presently employed at a particular statutory corporation. He emphatically mentioned that the employees of that cohort were receiving  extremely high salaries and yet the professional services rendered to its clientel was below par.

Perhaps an introspection needs to be done among those who are occupying the top positions within the statutory establishments. A restructuring may be needed also, inorder to get optimum productivity. The board or minister responsible for the respective establishment may need to intervene.

At some establishments it is visible that the culture of settling into a comfort zone, laziness, selfishness, egotistic behavior and & greed adopted by those in the organization’s hierarchy is having a domino effect on the staff’s morale and productivity. Sadly, the customers or clients are the ones who suffers from the end result.

Disturbingly, instead of making progress in leaps & bounds, it is very unfortunate that some of these statutory organisations are making one step forward and several steps backward.
