Students across the Caribbean have had to battle with a number of challenges from natural disasters to the coronavirus pandemic and the death of a parent as a result of the virus. But many have risen above the adversity to perform credibly in the 2021 June/July Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC).
This was revealed by Dr Nicole Manning, Director of Operations at the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC).
Manning explained that this year’s exams were challenging to stage given these issues but CXC was able to adapt to ensure students were accommodated through deferrals and the utilisation of electronic testing facilities.
She revealed that around 90 per cent of students who wrote CAPE passed with acceptable grades from one to five.
But a number of subjects reported declined performances in 2021 when compared to 2020.
Caribbean Studies reported a 95 per cent pass rate in 2021 when compared to 98 per cent in 2020 and 97 per cent in 2019.
Communication Studies reported a 93 per cent pass rate in 2021 when compared to 96 per cent in 2021.
Approximately 92 per cent and 95 per cent of students who wrote Chemistry Unit One and Two passed.
CAPE Law was one of the subjects where students’ performances remained consistent.
Manning revealed that Guyana continues to outperform the Caribbean in many subject areas as the country recorded results that were at least two per cent better than the regional average.
In CSEC, English A recorded a regional pass rate of 74 per cent.
There is still some calculations taking place with the Mathematics pass rate but Manning noted that students attaining grade one increased to nine per cent.
Chemistry declined to 63 per cent, Principles of Business to 79 per cent and English B (Literature) declined to 61 per cent.
The results for IT and Biology remained consistent at 89 per cent.
Students will receive their results tomorrow. (LOOP NEWS)
