PM Browne Praises Skerrit as ‘Father of Modern Dominica’, Expresses Confidence in Sixth Term Win

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has hailed Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit as a transformative leader and expressed confidence that the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) could secure a sixth consecutive term in office under Skerrit’s leadership.

Speaking on his weekly Pointe FM programme on Saturday, June 7, Browne reflected on the strong bond between Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica, highlighting decades of mutual support and collaboration between the two nations.

He described the relationship between the two Labour Parties as “people-centred” and grounded in shared principles of social upliftment.

“He continues to contribute. He’s still a young man. Chances are, he probably may get elected—and I feel confident about it—for a sixth term, and will be able to continue to preside over the advancement of Dominica,” Browne said.

The Prime Minister called Skerrit “practically the modern father of Dominica,” crediting him with overseeing the island’s most significant period of socio-economic development.

“There’s no doubt that the results are tangible,” Browne noted. “After 20 years in office, he would have made the single largest contribution towards the socio-economic development of Dominica.”

Browne recounted key moments of solidarity between the two leaders, particularly Dominica’s assistance to Antigua and Barbuda during fiscal challenges.

“There were times when we couldn’t even meet salaries and wages,” Browne recalled. “Prime Minister Skerrit had to yield a portion of Dominica’s credit limit at the ECCB to allow us to draw additional funds.”

In return, Antigua and Barbuda stepped in to support Dominica in the wake of Hurricane Maria, accommodating over 3,000 displaced Dominicans and even offering Skerrit temporary office space in Antigua after the storm destroyed government buildings in Roseau.

The Prime Minister also underscored the natural integration between the peoples of Antigua, Dominica, and Montserrat, pointing to extensive familial ties and shared cultural heritage.

“We are brothers and sisters,” Browne declared. “In fact, within our population, 20 to 30 percent have some form of Dominican heritage.”

The event being discussed was a celebration held at the People’s Place in Point, Antigua, in honour of the Dominican Labour Party’s 70th anniversary. Browne said the gathering was “electrifying” and praised the enthusiastic turnout of Dominicans living in Antigua.

He reiterated his administration’s open-door policy to the Dominican Labour Party: “Any time at all the DLP wants to use the People’s Place, it’s theirs, free of cost… and that should continue into perpetuity—even if I’m not around.”

As Dominica prepares for its next general election, Browne’s comments signal firm support for Skerrit and the continuity of Labour governance across the region.
