Barbuda is undergoing a significant economic transformation, driven by major development projects that are reshaping the island’s future.

During his Throne Speech, Governor General Sir Rodney Williams outlined the progress being made and the government’s commitment to integrating Barbuda into the broader economic framework of Antigua and Barbuda.

“Barbuda is undergoing significant economic transformation through major development projects driven by the government’s efforts to create favorable conditions for foreign direct investment,” Sir Rodney stated, emphasizing the pivotal role these initiatives play in reducing Barbuda’s reliance on government subventions.

Key to Barbuda’s transformation is the Peace, Love, and Happiness (PLH) project, which has already seen an investment of over $500 million since its launch in July 2020.

Sir Rodney noted that this development includes an international airport, a golf course, beach clubs, residences, and upgraded utilities. “In 2024 alone, PLH invested $85 million, with plans for an additional $120 million in 2025,” he said.

By its completion, the project is expected to create more than 12,000 jobs, including positions in construction and operations.

The Rosewood Luxury Hotel, another major project highlighted in the speech, represents a $250 million investment to replace the incomplete Dulcina structure.

Construction is set to begin in 2025 and will span three years. Sir Rodney explained that the hotel would generate 250 construction jobs during this period and provide permanent employment for approximately 200 staff upon completion.

In addition, the Paradise Found Development, which launched in January 2024 with a total budget of $63 million, is expected to be completed by May 2026. According to Sir Rodney, this project already features a high-end restaurant and plans to add a beach club, creating further employment opportunities and enhancing Barbuda’s appeal as a luxury destination.

Barbuda’s new airport was also singled out as a transformative project, offering improved connectivity and supporting the island’s growing tourism and business sectors. Sir Rodney mentioned plans for a deepwater harbor, which will enhance trade and solidify Barbuda’s position as a regional economic hub.

“These infrastructural improvements, alongside the development projects, are positioning Barbuda as a strategic economic contributor,” he said, underscoring the island’s evolving role within the national economy.

Sir Rodney’s speech painted a picture of Barbuda as a rising economic powerhouse. “These initiatives are transforming Barbuda from a diamond in the rough into a polished, thriving destination,” he remarked. The government’s focus on foreign direct investment, coupled with its commitment to creating jobs and improving infrastructure, is fostering an environment for sustained growth and prosperity.
