In Solidarity with Our Teachers: A Call for Support

As a sister to two teachers and friend to communities of teachers, I have witnessed firsthand their plight and struggles.

Despite the numerous challenges they face day in and day out, these dedicated individuals show up for our children with unwavering commitment—to nurture, guide, uplift, and teach.

It is disheartening to see how often we choose to tear them down instead of recognizing and celebrating their hard work and dedication.

It is losthsome and despicable that the Gaston Brown lead Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party administration, along with Minister of Education Daryl Matthew which promised teachers their retroactive pay before the last general election, is now trying to renege on that promise or has failed to fulfill it.

Teachers support our children in school every day, sometimes providing lunches, school supplies, and tools for educational learning. Their contributions extend beyond the classroom; they are mentors and role models who are deeply invested in the education and well-being of our children.

Today, I, Jermaine N. Edwards, a community advocate for St. John’s Rural South stands in solidarity with the teachers of Antigua and Barbuda, including our primary school teachers, secondary school teachers, and the devoted tertiary educators. It is crucial for us to come together as a community to support and uplift these educators rather than criticize them in their times of need.

On behalf of the teachers and alongside the teachers’ union, I urge the administration of the day to honor their commitments. We support our teachers and demand that they receive the retroactive pay they have earned.

They have been dedicated and diligent in their mission to provide quality education to our children, and it is time for the administration to acknowledge their hard work and fulfill its promises.

Let us stand with the teachers of Antigua and Barbuda, recognizing their tireless efforts and the critical role they play in raising the next generation. Together, we can create an environment that celebrates our educators and empowers them to continue their vital work.

In solidarity,
