The government is exploring new options for developing Fort James, a popular beach in Antigua.
Originally, the government had an agreement with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCL) to build a beach hotel and entertainment center. However, challenges in clearing rocks from the ocean floor have delayed these plans.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne mentioned that once dredging is completed this month, RCL plans to bring Oasis Class ships and may speed up the beach club project.
However, he is now considering other development options.
Browne suggested the government might partner with the private sector to build a tourism facility, including a mega-yacht marina and local shops.
This plan depends on negotiating an exit from the RCL contract without legal issues, which he views as a more beneficial option for locals.
