Canadian Med Student Sentenced to Jail for Horrifying Assault on Girlfriend at AUA

A 22-year-old Canadian student at the American University of Antigua (AUA), Marc Wanis, was sent to prison for physically and verbally abusing his 20-year-old Canadian girlfriend, a medical student.

Wanis pleaded guilty to battery and maliciously damaging items worth over $3,000.

The relationship, which began positively in April 2022, deteriorated into frequent verbal disputes and threats to the victim’s life.

On March 28, Wanis, armed with a knife, coerced his girlfriend to his apartment, where he smashed her phone, cut her student ID, and physically assaulted her.

Despite Wanis’ cooperation with the police, verbal apology, willingness to pay for damages, and enrollment in anger management sessions, Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel sentenced him to seven days in jail and a fine of almost $5,000.
