LETTER: CMC is operating like a food club whose members are the selected few with vouchers

Dear Editor

This letter is not about trolling UPP. It is a very serious issue for hardworking, underpaid people like me. So I am hoping you would publish it.

I saw with my own eyes that the CMC is operating like a food club whose members are the selected few with vouchers.

I wanted to buy some oranges and I was told that food had come at the CMC and I should to go there. While inside, I saw many people coming in who probably heard the same thing. Inside, there were already many persons with large carts full of food items.

I was shocked to see what I saw going on. These carts were full of items like bags and bags of expensive grapes, large expensive bags of salmon, plastic containers of strawberries, large plastic bags of name brand chicken, expensive cuts of pork, racks of ribs, and so much more.

What caused my mouth to fall open was they were paying for these high priced foods with food vouchers.

Many of these persons were coming from their jobs to get these goods. I kept wondering if these vouchers were not for persons who were elderly, unemployed, disabled, or were having a hard time making ends meet, but it did not seem so. I asked someone like me who was staring at these big baskets of expensive foods what was going on, and I got the answer.

These were persons who supported the Antigua Labour Party and the vouchers were a reward. One woman had a purse full. She could hardly push the cart out of the door of the CMC.

I realized the voucher system has very little to do with needy people. It is for those who support the red. I paid for my oranges and left.

I also realized that the CMC has nothing to do with help for the poor and the indigent. It is not there to help ease the squeeze for those who are barely making it. It exists to import high and other exotic foods for Labour party supporters.

I looked at some of them and saw plain GREED. GLUTTONY.

It reminded me of the persons who got 5 and 6 hams and turkeys and could not even store 2 properly. It reminded me of the free bags of school supplies where a family with 2 school age children would get 3 or 4 bags of supplies for each child.

I could not help thinking about how just one cartful of fancy and exotic foods from the CMC could feed a family in need for a whole month. The greed I saw in those people at CMC won’t leave my mind.

I weep for my people.

Shameful
